We want you to stay healthy while you study here, which is why all students are required to meet health and immunization requirements to help ensure access to the care they need.
Gateway students with F-1 and J-1 visa status who will be living in the United States are required to have George Mason’s Aetna Student Health insurance. You will automatically be enrolled in this plan and fees are paid to the university via your PatriotWeb account. Student Health Services can provide specific information about your insurance plan and coverage.
We encourage you to download your health insurance cards after arriving at Gateway. You can also access your card online through the Aetna Student Health website.
If you currently have a U.S. health insurance plan and believe you qualify for a health insurance waiver, check the waiver eligibility requirements.
Immunizations
Student Health Services requires all newly admitted students or newly re-admitted students to submit immunization records through George Mason's patient portal by August 1, 2026.
You must download the Immunization Record form that must be completed in English and signed by a doctor before you arrive on campus.
You can get required vaccinations from your local doctor or hospital before you leave your country. However, if you don't have proof of immunizations, you can call the Immunization Office at 703-993-2135 or visit the patient portal to schedule a Student Health Services appointment. All required vaccinations are free if you're enrolled in the university health insurance plan.
A health care professional must complete Parts 3 and 4 of the form, and if applicable, Part 2. Students born after December 31, 1956, must provide documented proof that they have been immunized against hepatitis B, measles, mumps, and rubella, meningococcal, poliomyelitis, tetanus/diphtheria, and tuberculosis.
The Commonwealth of Virginia and the George Mason Immunization Policy mandate immunization requirements. Student Health Services is responsible for collecting and maintaining students’ immunization records.
